NATIONAL SINGING STAR AWARDS FINALE
WELCOMES SPECIAL GUESTS:
Martha Reeves (of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas) found fame in the 1960s with a string of hit singles on Motown's Gordy label. Founded in 1960 by friends Annette Beard, Rosalind Ashford and Gloria Williams, the band eventually included Martha Reeves, who moved up in ranks as lead vocalist of the group after Williams' departure in 1962. The group signed with and eventually recorded all of their singles for Motown's Gordy imprint. The group's string of hits included "(Love Is Like a) Heat Wave", "Nowhere to Run", "Jimmy Mack", "Bless You" and "Dancing in the Street", the latter song becoming their signature single. During their nine-year run on the charts from 1963 to 1972, Martha and the Vandellas charted over twenty-six hits and recorded in the styles of doo-wop, R&B, pop, blues, rock and roll and soul. Ten Vandellas songs reached the top ten of the Billboard R&B singles chart, including two R&B number ones.
This group of highly talented performers hails from the Motor City of Detroit. During the British Invasion of the sIxties, they were one of the few vocal groups to land a string of top selling hits. Their first multi-million hit (Just Like) Romeo & Juliet topped the charts in 1964. And in quick sucession, they continued to dominate the charts with top 40 hits. "Poor Man's Son", "Shabby Little Hut" and "Just Like Columbus". Dick Clark mentored The Reflections early years with apperances on American Bandstand and included them on his many Caravan of Stars bus tours nationwide. Terry Stewart, the President and CEO of the Cleveland Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was quoted as saying, "The beauty of all this is that The Reflections have never gone away. In fact, most would say that they've only gotten better. In short, let me put it another way. These guys could sing the phone book and bring the house down. All of us at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum love these fellows and we are proud to call them family." Today, they continue to tour the country with some of the greatest names in rock n' roll history.
It was a real pleasure meeting you last nite.
You did a great job keeping the show togeather with the judging.
We were proud to be a small part of this rewarding event.

Hello Debi and Julie
I wanted to take a moment to thank you and Julie for allowing Iris to be a part
of the Detroit Singing Star Competition. It was such a great learning experience
for her. She has been competing on a much smaller scale in 4-H and even won
last year the State 4-H Award for Performing Arts, but this was the first time
she was introduced to such a talented and diverse group.
She totally enjoyed herself and I was very happy about how fairly and
compassionate you both were with all the contestants. Even after the Finals when
we thought she had been eliminated from the Awards Finale we left feeling happy
that she had competed although sad that she had not gone on she valued what she
The entire competition was run very professionally, but with a wonderful human
touch that made it feel like family. Again thank you for letting us have this
Julie and Debi,
Thanks for all you are doing for these children! We can't begin to tell you how much fun Sammy has had doing this event! You had some great talent there! It was her first charity competition (actually any competition) and even though she is not moving forward she had a GREAT time and grew in her confidence level. She is taking away so much from this and she will have memories that will last forever. I pray that she will have other opportunities to be able to do this type of fundraising again, while doing what she loves to do which is SING! I have to share something with you. My family has a lot of heart disease, the condition we have is Cardiomyopathy and it is a weakened heart muscle. This is one of the conditions that doctors worry about when kids play competitive sports and die while doing so. She recently was diagnosed with a mild form of this condition (I also have a more severe case) and she was recently told she cannot play competitive sports and needs to limit her weight lifting. I explain this because she woke up last Saturday morning and saw on the news that Children's Miracle Network was funding a FREE heart check for students at a local high school. THIS WAS AWESOME for her! She LOVED seeing that what she was helping raise money to fund additional events like this. She also signed up to help the American Heart Association as a teen ambassador and is looking forward to try to help raise awareness and money for additional research. I only tell you this, because I want you to know that what you are doing not only helps kids in the hospital who don't have a voice or a way to help, but you also help kids experience helping others and what a great feeling it is! Singing for others and not just for the competition! Sammy would LOVE to continue to grow and learn how to be a better singer and we will do our best to support her in this! Life is full of ups and downs and going through this has helped me see that we need to work to find ways to help her continue what she loves to do! We don't have a lot of money for lessons (I can only work part time for health reasons), but I am going to search for ways to help her to grow in her singing ability and see if there are any other charity events for her to participate in! If you have any ideas, please let me know. Thank you for ALL you do!
God bless you!
Amber and I were looking for you after last nights award ceremony... We just wanted to say thank you for having the auditions and giving Amber a time to shine! We are so proud of her and just had a lot of fun.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and keep up the great work!!!
Amy and Amber Silva
Thank you so very much for all your help, suggestions and encouragement you
have given to Rhianna, we really appreciate it! You and Julie both are awesome!
I want to learn from this experience. Thanks again for all of your work and help over the past couple weeks. Its been fun.
Rachael A. Pavloski
This whole experience really has been SO fun and SO great
for me to do what I love, do something that's just for me while still being able
to do good for others by raising a few hundred for RBCH so far with hopefully a
few hundred more to go!
Again, thank you so much for this wonderful experience. From your initial correspondence getting me excited (and nervous) to sing Peter Gabriel at the initial audition through your encouragement at all of the performance events you've been great to work with. I hope we do keep in touch.
Thanking u 4 all of ur kind help and advice. i am so excited. this is a great opportunity and sooooooooooooo much fun.
I want to thank you for your hard work, professionalism and kindness. It has been an absolute pleasure to have my daughter in this competition...win or lose. T.C.
I really enjoyed participating in the contest and I'm appreciative for you guys sending me this far. It was a great experience & I hope to see you all again in the future! Thank so much Debi!
I want to thank you both for the incredible opportunity you have offered me through Singing Star. When it was over (and I didn't win), you CONTINUED to offer me performance opportunities. I appreciate you believing in me and keeping me in your radar.
